Introducing new training partnerships and shelter designs to prevent sexual violence was a no-brainer for the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO). “We know that planning to prevent sexual violence after an emergency is the right thing to do,” says Rebecca Jackson, senior emergency management advisor at WREMO. Evidence shows sexual violence increases during and following emergencies or natural disasters and in times of crisis. But it’s something many people and organisations don’t think of. “I believe that everyone has a role to play in sexual violence prevention. From individuals like you and me to small businesses, large organisations, and government institutions, whether local or central,” says sexual violence prevention specialist, Tallulah Cardno.
ACC’s very first ‘Learning over lunch’ session, with Tallulah Cardno from Wellington City Council and facilitated by Dr Hala Nasr, Prevention Workforce Lead at ACC. Tallulah Cardno (Ngāi Tahu), Wellington City Council’s sexual violence prevention advisor, shares her experiences activating primary prevention in Pōneke. Tallulah shares the benefits, opportunities and challenges of having a dedicated sexual violence prevention role within the Council. Her role has enabled sharing of technical expertise on safe, effective sexual violence prevention, nurturing of local champions and leaders, and coordination of violence prevention activity across the region. This webinar is the first in a series to grow and improve primary prevention practice.
